Reading Time

I overheard Handsome offer for Gorgeous to sit on his lap and read to her.  Of course she took him up on the offer, and I had to get a picture of it. :)

Every school day Handsome has to do his independent reading, where he pulls a book out of  his special box of books he has read to me and shown he can read on his own.  He then has to read it out loud to Gorgeous or Adorable.  He now does this several times and day without me asking.  I love it!!

Handsome is becoming a great reader!  It is wonderful to see him take off.  His favorite books are the "Fly Guy" series.  He is currently reading the "Magic School Bus- Scholastic readers"  They are a blast as well.

Our Valentines Day

The night before Valentines Daddy and I stayed up.  Daddy made a fun heart chain to decorate, while I made a Valentine treasure hunt.

When dad got home that day we sent the kids on the treasure hunt.  Handsome had to read the clues as they went from room to room.

In the end they found their Valentines from us. :)

Next was a yummy dinner of heart pancakes with sprinkles and whipped topping.  As well as eggs and sausage.  YUM!

Then the kids sent us on a treasure hunt for their valentines.  It went something like this.

Handsome: "Go look in the Piano room"
Me: (after spending a minute looking) "I can't find anything"
Handsome: "Oh, OK then go look in the toy room"

Dad and I looked there a minute, until we were directed to another room.  The pattern continued until we were told to look in our room under our dresser, and there we found the valentines the kids had made days earlier, waiting for us. :)

I LOVE the way Handsome spelled Valentines Day.

And Gorgeous did a great job with her heart as well.

Of course there were many valentine pictures there for us, but these were some of my favorite.

Lincoln's Birthday = Gingerbread Cookies

To celebrate Abraham Lincoln's birthday we read books about Abraham.  Then I asked the kids, mostly Handsome, to tell me stories and important things that they remembered about Abraham.  Then we celebrated, the kids chose to make gingerbread men; 1) because there is a story about gingerbread men in the book about Abraham Lincoln we read and 2) because we had read a book called "Ginger Bear" that the kids liked.  I had never made Gingerbread cookies before, but we tried and they were good.

Handsome loved the smell of the dough.

As I was adding ingredients the kids got to taste a few of them.  Some they liked, others not so much.  But when it was all mixed into the dough they liked it. :)

It was a fun way to learn and celebrate.  I'll have to remember this for the future.

Swimming Lessons

Handsome has started swimming lessons and he is loving every minute of it!

Here he is waiting for his class to start, and sporting his new haircut. :)

After his first lesson he asked me if he was the best on out there.  And then proceeded to tell me how he is trying so hard to be the best at everything in class.  Got to love the heart he puts into it.

It cracks me up (as well as the other moms around me) when he is kicking his feet.  He is just trying so hard and loving every minute of it.

I was able to sign Handsome up for the same class as one of his friends. So he gets to have a friend in the water with him, and I get to have her mom (my friend) to sit and chat with while they swim.

Haircut Time

It was haircut time in our house, and all the boys got hair cuts.  And this was Adorable's FIRST haircut!

So I loved the Mohawk look for awhile, but really it was getting TOO long and straggly.  So it was time to even things out.  I think this is the youngest I've ever cut my kids hair.  (Gorgeous has not even had her first haircut yet!)

Daddy got to do the honors.  And, holding with tradition, I saved some of his baby hair in an envelope. (I have my baby hair, and I saved Handsome's baby hair as well)

And the end result.  OK, so really you can't tell in the picture, but in person it looks nice, and once again I like to spike his hair. :)

New Wool Hat

I am soooo a hat person.  Too bad they don't look good on me.  But when it comes to my kids, especially babies, I LOVE to put hats on them.  However, when Adorable got older he would take any hat off in less than 5 seconds.

I had started this wool hat in hopes of making it a Christmas present, but that didn't happen.  And by the time I finished it, I was worried that it would never be worn for more than a few seconds.  But happily, because of the tie I put on it, once it is tied he doesn't even try to take it off. :)  YEAH!  And of course this new hat is of the same wool yarn that I made his newborn hat and booties out of. :)  Happy memories.

Nastalgia

The other day I put the first wool soaker on Adorable.  It was one I used with Gorgeous.  I would like to say it was because I was doing it for his benefit, but really, I had slacked on the diaper washing, and had no clean covers.  So I pulled the wool soakers out.  Seeing it on him gave me a feeling of happiness.  It reminded me of when Gorgeous was once that little.

They also looked so stinkin' cute on him!

Windy Day = Kite Flying

Daddy got home early from work one day and brought the kite in from the shed.  It had been a VERY windy day, so we all packed up and headed for the field behind the church building to fly our kite.

It fell a few times, but Handsome was happy to run out there and get it back up in the air again.

Grandma Cooking Class- February

For Grandma's Cooking Class the kids made German Pancakes.  Yum!  I think that was the one Gorgeous picked to make.

While the kids waited for the pancake to bake, Grandma helped them make these mice made out of treats (Oreo cookie, Chocolae dipped cherry, almonds, and a kiss dipped in red sprinkles.

What fun!

Birthday Time

We recently got to celebrate Kent's birthday.

Early in the morning I heard Handsome up and moving around.  I went out to investigate, telling him that he had lost his Privilege Pass for getting up before dad and I were.  He acknowledged that he was giving it up (a big deal!!), but wanted to get up early to do a surprise for Daddy's Birthday.  What was the surprise?  He set the table for us for breakfast.  What a sweet boy!  I had to follow our rules, and he knew he wouldn't earn the privilege pass, but said it was worth it.  And we talked about sacrificing a good thing for a better thing.

Handsome also drew pictures for Daddy.  He drew a heart and wrote I love you, and on another paper wrote Happy Birthday.  Gorgeous also drew a picture for Daddy.

So our morning started with a birthday surprise and birthday notes and hugs for Daddy!

Then daddy had to go help with cutting down trees from the big storm.  While he was gone we made a cake for him.  And since daddy loves marshmallows, and loves to play Lego's with Handsome, we made him a Lego cake that had marshmallows on the top. :)  He liked it.

We had a birthday dinner and then cake.  The kids had previously helped me pick out a birthday card for dad, and we all signed our names to it.  But they still insisted on getting him a gift.  Weeks in advance Handsome had made a gift for daddy and had it hidden.  After the card, Handsome ran to get his gift.  I had to take a video of it so you can hear Handsome's explanation of the present.  It's priceless.

When Gorgeous realized that Handsome had a present for Daddy she was dismayed that she didn't have anything for him.  Again I tried to explain that she helped me pick out the card.  But that didn't work.  Quickly, she jumped up and ran to the toy room, returning with her own favorite purple Hippo.  It was so sweet that she would give up one of her favorite toys as a gift to her daddy.

And then it was cake time.  All enjoyed some (except for Adorable, I'm cruel and didn't let him have any, I gave him cereal instead).

And the birthday boy, himself.  Happy Birthday, we love you Daddy!

Weather Investigation

During the big storm (OK, so it was just big to us Northwester's who are not use to much) I took the opportunity to include it in school and have Handsome do some weather investigation.

An idea I got from the Charlotte Mason Companion book by Karen Andreola, was to have a dark cloth and catch snowflakes on it, then have the kids look at the snowflakes with a magnifying glass.  After, they drew their observations in their nature journal.  Handsome also wanted to go out and "investigate" the icicles, and then he drew pictures of them in his nature journal.

Another fun thing that I remember doing when I was in..., I think 3rd grade, was the teacher sending a child or two out in the snow to measure it with a ruler.  I had to let Handsome have the same experience.  So we made a snow chart and Handsome would measure the snow and come in and record the information on his chart.

It was fun having the snow and ice, and using it as a learning experience, as well as learning about electricity when the power went out.  Can I just say I am so happy to be homeschooling, I know it is not for everyone and many moms do the things I do on top of sending their kids to public school.  Me, I love the time with the kids and I love teaching them.  This is just what we need to be doing right now.
